Zimmer Knee Replacement Recall

Recently, a study “The High Failure Rate of a High-Flex Total Knee Anthroplasty Design” has suggested that a percentage of Zimmer, Inc.’s NexGen CR-Flex knee system, a system containing a cementless high-flex femoral component, is failing much earlier than expected in some patients, a knee replacement system that is supposed to last 15 years. As a result, several well known orthopedic surgeons have stopped using the medical device altogether. Although there are prominent doctors and surgeons calling for a Zimmer knee recall, Zimmer has decided to keep their product on the market.

Alleged High Failure Rate Sparks Suggestions of

Zimmer Knee Replacement Recall

Dr. Richard A Berger, a respected orthopedic surgeon, first began using Zimmer’s NexGen CR-Flex system in 2005, and implanted the device into 125 patients in the first year. In 2006, X-rays revealed lines where the implant met the thighbone, which indicated that the Zimmer knee replacements were not fusing fully with the thighbone as they should. Although patients were able to walk, they reported pain that was later alleged to be caused by the loose joint.

Dr. Berger reported his findings to Zimmer, however, the company did not confirm the problem since the NexGen CR-Flex knee replacement system had not been clinically tested on patients before it was sold. Dr. Berger then performed a study on cementless high-flex femoral components that found the following statistics:

  • 8.3% (9 out of 108) of the cementless high-flex femoral component implants “have had revision or impending revision for painful loosening”
  • 36% of cementless high-flex femoral component implants “are loose”

Given these findings, it is alleged that some orthopedic surgeons have expressed a belief that Zimmer, Inc. should perform a Zimmer knee replacement recall immediately.

Despite the growing evidence of an allegedly defective product, Zimmer, Inc. continues to manufacture and sell the NexGen CR-Flex knee replacement system. The medical device continues to be used in patients, in some cases causing pain or the need for a second knee replacement surgery.
